Background of the Study

Depression is a common mental health disorder among the elderly, yet it often goes unrecognized and untreated in this population. Depression in older adults can be caused or exacerbated by factors such as chronic illness, isolation, loss of independence, and cognitive decline. It is associated with poor physical health outcomes, including increased mortality, functional decline, and poor quality of life (Reis et al., 2023). The effective management of depression in elderly patients requires a comprehensive approach that includes pharmacological treatment, psychotherapy, and support systems.

In Kaduna State, there may be limited access to mental health services, and many elderly individuals may not seek or receive the care they need. This study aims to assess the prevalence of depression in elderly patients in Kaduna State, the management strategies employed by healthcare providers, and the challenges faced in treating this condition.

Statement of the Problem

Depression in elderly patients often goes undiagnosed due to age-related stigma, misdiagnosis, or a lack of trained healthcare providers. In Kaduna State, this may contribute to untreated depression, negatively affecting the quality of life and overall health of elderly patients. This study seeks to assess the extent of depression among elderly patients in Kaduna State and evaluate the management strategies employed to address the condition.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of depression among elderly patients in Kaduna State.
  2. To evaluate the current management strategies for depression in elderly patients in Kaduna State.
  3. To identify the challenges faced in managing depression among elderly patients in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of depression among elderly patients in Kaduna State?
  2. What management strategies are currently used for treating depression in elderly patients in Kaduna State?
  3. What are the challenges faced by healthcare providers in managing depression in elderly patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. A significant number of elderly patients in Kaduna State suffer from undiagnosed depression.
  2. The management strategies for depression in elderly patients in Kaduna State are inadequate due to a lack of mental health resources.
  3. Improving mental health care training for healthcare providers will improve the diagnosis and treatment of depression in elderly patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly patients in both urban and rural areas of Kaduna State, gathering data from healthcare providers, patient surveys, and medical records. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting and the difficulty in identifying elderly patients who may not report or recognize their depression symptoms.

Definitions of Terms
